iPad 2 in production, iPad 3 on deck
Right about on time. With the iPad 2 announcement sometime next month and delivery around the beginning of April, Apple’s building stock of their next-generation tablet computer — yes, it is a computer. Interestingly, insiders are now saying the mothership’s brewing a third quarter update, which could bury competitors as they ramp for the holidays.
Wall Street Journal reports that Foxconn (a.k.a. Hon Hai), Apple’s major product assembly partner in China, has already started building the iPad 2 ahead of an early April launch. The new model is expected be thinner, include a faster processor and sport front and back mounted cameras — hello, FaceTime.
Whereas the company sold 14.8-million original iPads in 2010, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster says he anticipates Apple will sell nearly twice that number — 27 million — this year.
September surprise
Some time after the Wall Street Journal went to press, John Gruber, who has a strong rumorological track record, intimated that the iPad 3 will be announced/ship in September. He has nothing to say on the subject of features, but this is a bombshell nonetheless.
What could Apple be planning for the iPad 3 or will the company be coming to market with a variant? I’m thinking a true “iPod touch steroids” (i.e. 7-inch model).
That’s something I could really sink my teeth into, especially if comes with 3G data…
What’s your take?

Gruber didn’t “intimate” anything. According to his own post, he had no – none, 0, zilch – inside info, which he often has, but not in this case. In this case, he was just guessing.
It was a WAG, a wild-ass-guess. Maybe he’s right, but your story makes it sound like a leak, and your headline makes it sound like a confirmed announcement. Neither are true.
